Volkswagen Golf GTI
This car has been winning awards since it came to Australia. So thought I'll go to one of the dealers to take it for an extended trip.
Obviously to persuade them that you're a serious buyer (as there is a 6 months waiting period on the GTI), you had to test a lower range first... I ended up testing the 1.6, the 2.0l and finally the GTI (2L Turbo).
This car drives as well it all the articles read, but it's just missing 1 thing - The Chick factor. If you're an introvert (or pretend to be), then this car is perfect for you. No one really notices you, except the people who know - and with those people, they tend not to race you as they appreciate the handling of the GTI than pure performance. This car is a pleasure to drive in the city due to the huge torque available and on Twisty Mountainous roads such as the Mystic Mountains down near Marysville. Absolutely no effort in driving!!
The DSG transmission is even better - as it saves fuel, is faster than a manual, and dirves like an auto when you need to... only problem with it, is you end up driving it as an auto most of the time. Gets a bit boring.
However if you're buying it to "show off," then you're better off with a MX5 or a WRX or even something that looks like a sportscar . This car doesn't have the $ex appeal of sports cars, and even when you drive friends, there is nothing different to say its special inside. No Turbo timers, no extra pressure guage. no special effects... and because the turbo and the car is so smooth and stable (has basically no turbo lag), friend's won't even realise it's turbo unless you tell them.
This car will make you LOVE driving all over again. It deserves every single award it has won!
