Wacom Intuos3 Tablet

I really enjoy drawing and one of main gripes with drawing on a computer was always how difficult it was using the mouse. No matter how much time and effort it never felt natural to me to hold for long hours. I’ve been wanting to get a tablet for a very long time. I've finally decided to take the plunge to purchase one last year.

The tablet purchased was the Wacom Intuos3. For those who don't know much about tablets, Wacom is a company specializing in making high quality drawing tablets and are used almost exclusively everywhere by professional artists around the world. The intuos3 range is the flagship non display tablet range from Wacom. It can be purchased in many dimensions and is even offered in wide screen format, all at reasonably low price. The tablets can be purchased at significantly lower than the suggested RRP if you look hard enough in computer catalogues.

Anyway, using the pen instead of the mouse made a huge difference for me. Coloring, drawing and photo editing in Photoshop takes much quicker to do. It is far more intuitive and productive to use a tablet. Those tablets allow 1024 pressure levels, more than enough to create variation in your drawing and coloring when using Photoshop and Corel Painter. The amount of precision obtained also far outdo the mouse when editing photos. If you enjoy drawing or like to do a lot of image manipulation, do yourself a favor and get a tablet. It is worth it. I only wish I’ve purchased one a lot earlier.

The Joy of Driving

The mundane drive to work, to the shops, to the relatives and back home has made driving a joyless task. For many people this is what they perceive driving to be which is compounded by the choice of vehicle to “get them from A to B” mentality.

Driving in itself can be an enjoyable experience that takes the individual from their worries and cares and let them enjoy the freedom the open road provides. The act of driving in itself is pure pleasure when taken on with a different mindset in that you focus on the drive. You become one with the car, the road and your surroundings to complete a puzzle that changes and bends with your environment.

Simple Rules to have an enjoyable drive:

1) Ensure you get plenty of sleep
2) Ensure car is good working order ( pretty obvious or else ensure RACV membershipis up to date) :P
3) Check the weather to ensure you are prepared
4) Bring the Melway or GPS navigator ( sometimes you can go off track)
5) Plan the general trip in terms of the suburbs/towns and the total time you estimate it will take
6) Bring a water bottle ( essential item) and snacks if you want
7) Petrol Petrol Petrol
8) Take regular breaks, especially if driving challenging or long distances.

Now the other thing to note is that the car you drive will make a difference to your enjoyment depending if you want a pleasant Sunday drive or you are road maniac.
Whatever car you have, remember to stick to the speed limits and drive accordingly to the road conditions.

Remember to have fun and company on these trips is almost welcome. :)

Good Locations for that nice drive:

1) Great Ocean Road ( Whether you are young or old, crazy or not, this road is one of the best scenic and twisty roads by far)

Warning:
- Watch out for slow cars and fast motorbikes
- Sand and dirt can cover the road

2) Black Spur – Marysville, Lake Mountain and Warburton (The fresh crisp air and mountain roads make for awesome drive).

Warning:
- Watch out for rain and snow, especially in the cooler months (rapid weather changes)
- Watch out for fast motorbikes along these roads
- Wildlife will cross the road

3) Arthur’s Seat ( Victoria’s troubled chairlift presents an awesome twisty road)

Warning:
- Steep incline up and decline down , ensure you stay at a safe speed
- Cars with smaller engines , with auto gearbox and fwd will struggle up
- Motorbikes frequent the area
- Ensure brakes are in good working order, especially going down –make use of manual gearbox if applicable.
- When wet can be slippery up and down the hill

4) Great Alpine Road (Victoria’s Snowfields)

Warning:
- Usable only during the summer months ( winter will require snow chains fitted)
- Bushfires in that region can occur
- Rapid weather changes in the mountain region

5) Strathbogie (before the township, turnoff towards Euroa off Melba Hwy)
A great stretch of twisty roads up rocky hills and mountains.

Warning:
- Wildlife loves to cross the road
- You can get lost easily in that region
- Facilities are scarce if you get into trouble

**Caveat: Please take this guide as a recommendation and not a definitive guide on what occurs in these areas. Always check local news and use discretion and common sense when driving in any area. Please follow the speed limit and local laws and stay safe and have fun. Comments made are based on personal experiences through these areas.**

Anime Drawings

I haven't been posting things as often as I should lately. I've been busy lately with drawing. It has been a while since I've drawn so naturally my drawings are a bit sloppy to look at but I'm starting to get the hang of it again.

Anyway, for those interested in anime/manga drawings you can view some of my work here. Any feedback (good or bad) are welcome :)

This drawing of Vegeta (DragonBall Z) was done yesterday. It was first drawn in pencil, then scanned and cleaned up on Photoshop.

If you are serious about creating illustrations there are certain tools and softwares that are required such as:

- Adobe Photoshop (Probably the best software in terms of editing photos)
- Adobe Illustrator (Use it to creator vector illustration)
- A drawing tablet (I personally recommend the Wacom Intuos3 tablet. They are excellent to use!)
- A scanner (Doesn't have to be an expensive or high quality one as it is quite easy now to fix up and adjust pictures using Photoshop).

Last of all, patience, dedication and practice are required if you want to create nice work. Sadly I'm missing patience these days, I want results now! LOL :P

The Lost Final Fantasy Saga

"Once upon a time, when Earth was still a beautiful place, an evil force came to turn all living things into Vegetarians. Three students from suburban Massachusetts would step up against this catastrophe... to end Vegetarian Supremacy."
Brilliant!

Nintendo Wii Mod - Take 1

Wii KO'ed faster than you can say uncle

The world's first wii mod chip is beginning to be shipped out today. It's called the wiinja. All that's required is the soldering of five wires. It'll certainly save Wii owners $$$ in terms of buying games but I don't know if you would want to take the plunge into first gen mods. A few question comes to mind...impact on internet capabilities and can this mod be overcome with a simple firmware update? Only time will tell.

My Powerful Honda Civic

Since we are on the row here with car reviews I'll add my 2 cents to this category by commenting on my exciting 4 speed auto Honda civic, which has a whopping 86kw on tap acquired in August 2005 sparkly new from the dealer!

The 2005 Civic came in sedan or hatch form with the Hatch using the VTEC engine. This model is the last of the 7th generation civic with Honda introducing the 8th generation range last year (in sedan form only unfortunately).

Anyway, how does the car drive you may ask? Just like a Camry, slow, boring and un-agile. Ok maybe I'm exaggerating a bit. In terms of handling it goes ok but this car does not take sharp corner turns well. I was left in dust during a drive in Daylesford with friends (although hardly fair comparison on my part as he was driving his WRX) but you get the picture, the Civic is no performance vehicle. It therefore amuses me greatly when I see posers on the road with their done up Civics (oh and don't even mentioned those Hyundai Excels!!! FUGLY!!!). You know the typical big exhaust, body kit, spoiler and monster wheels. Just plain sad!

Putting the performance aspect aside, this car is extremely reliable and fuel efficient. Unlike my unfortunate friend's ex Ford XR6 Turbo I have never had a single problem with the car or whatsoever. So if you are the person that just wants to travel from A to B, this car might be right for you. No doubt I have wished I had bought a more powerful car at times but overall I am satisfied with this vehicle...I think.
